Mission
The purpose of an organization, a department within an organization or single facility or a portfolio.

This is a statement of the overall purpose of the organization. A reason for being. It answers the question: Why does the organization exist?

For example: the purpose of Amiable Housing Society is to provide useful and functional housing facilities for the benefit of those in need in the local community.



Mission Relative to Facilities
With respect to individual facilities - for example:
  • The purpose of a recreation centre is to provide useful and functional facilities for the benefit of the local community.
  • The purpose of a fire hall is to provide fire protection support to the local community.
With respect to portfolios - for example:
  • The purpose of a civic portfolio of fire halls and recreation centres is to serve the public good
  • The purpose of a portfolio of hotels it to generate revenue for the shareholders


Mission within the Hierarchical Context
The organization's mission statement occupies one of the base layers of the inspirational-and-aspirational hierarchy. 
Without an adequate vision statement, the organization will encounter difficulties when developing some of the other layers of the aspirational-inspirational hierarchy.
